Behind every statistic on homelessness lies a hidden reality. Children grow up in temporary or insecure accommodation. Mothers navigate impossible circumstances with minimal support.
At the Shared Health Foundation Homeless Families Conference, our CEO, Dr Emma Williamson, met Marcia and Gifty. These extraordinary women work with The Magpie Project, bringing this reality into sharp focus.
The Birth of The Magpie Project
The Magpie Project was founded in 2017 by Jane Williams, a local who recognised the stark challenges facing mothers and their under-fives living in temporary accommodation in Newham. What began as a safe, clean, and welcoming space has transformed into a lifeline for hundreds of families. Their model is clear and consistent: belonging, advocacy, practical support, and play.
Services Offered by The Magpie Project
The Magpie Project offers a range of essential services:
Safe Space: A nurturing environment where mums and their little ones can relax, play, and feel welcomed without judgement.
Family Support: Helping mothers access housing, welfare, education, training, and specialist services.
Advocacy and Rights Work: Led by mums with lived experience through their REACH team.
Practical Essentials: Providing nappies, clothing, baby items, food, and community connections.
Play and Early Years Support: Creating stimulating environments that help children thrive, even in unstable circumstances.
Their ethos is simple: kindness, compassion, and trust are the interventions that work.
The Right to a Secure Childhood
We believe that all children deserve a secure, safe place to play, healthy food, engaged and informed parents, and access to support, regardless of their family circumstances. The work of organisations like The Magpie Project makes this possible. For those of us in housing, health, and social care, understanding the trauma that families in temporary accommodation carry is crucial. It helps us show up well for them.
Join the Campaign: No Child Without a Kitchen
Join their campaign—no child in a home without a kitchen. It’s heartbreaking that hundreds of children are going without home-cooked meals, living in hotels with just a kettle. The Magpie Project's latest petition aims to change this. They want to ensure that all homes for families have kitchens as standard. If you want to show your support, please sign their petition.
The Impact of Community Support
There's an incredible network of charities doing wonderful work every day, largely unseen. We've chosen to spotlight The Magpie Project, but there are many others making a difference. Who would you add to the list? 👇
The Magpie Project exemplifies how compassion and community support can create real, lasting change. By empowering mothers and their children, they are not just addressing immediate needs; they are fostering a sense of belonging and hope.
In our work, we must remember that behind every statistic is a story. Each family has unique challenges and strengths. By understanding and addressing these, we can contribute to a more supportive environment for those facing complex challenges.
Let’s continue to advocate for change and support initiatives that uplift families in need. Together, we can make a difference.
